LAS VEGAS, Jan. 21, 2003 - Owens Corning announced today the formation of an innovative sponsorship that creates an alliance in Building Science technology with the Environments For Living® program. This unique program enables the builder to enhance the overall livability of the home while providing the homeowner with peace of mind relative to energy usage. Owens Corning brings a strong heritage of research and development in Building Science technology to this sponsorship.

Builders can offer homeowners a wide range of benefits by using the Environments For Living program to help improve comfort and indoor air quality; quiet interiors; lower monthly energy usage and the opportunity for greater resale value. All Environments For Living Gold and Platinum homes surpass the Model Energy Code by at least 30 percent and are recognized as EPA ENERGY STAR® Homes.

The Environments For Living program will be available through Owens Corning's Certified Energy Professionals, who must meet strict training and construction standards, as well as completion of Owens Corning's internal training program. These individuals are Owens Corning-trained insulation contractors who are experts in home design, construction, codes and standards, and noise control systems. Builders use CEP contractors to efficiently insulate their homes to our highest quality standards.

The Owens Corning Certified Energy Professional program, in existence for more than 28 years, is the longest running contractor certification program in the country.

The Environments For Living program includes a comprehensive planning process and stringent builder requirements, which include the following:

  • Plan Review - Specialists evaluate the home's energy and construction features and make specific recommendations for enhanced comfort and more efficient energy use.
  • High Construction Requirements - Homes must meet the program's specifications for tight construction, fresh air ventilation, pressure balancing, combustion safety and other requirements.
  • Energy Use Limited Guarantee - Homeowners at all levels of the program receive this guarantee, which assures that if the energy used for heating and cooling exceeds a pre-determined estimate, 100 percent of the cost of the difference is refunded.
  • Comfort Limited Guarantee - Offered at the Gold and Platinum levels, the comfort guarantee promises that the temperature at the location of the thermostat will not vary more than 3 degrees from the temperature at the center of any conditioned room for that zone.

The Environments For Living program was developed by Masco Contractor Services and two leading companies in the field of Building Science: Building Science Corp., a leading expert in advanced construction technologies and building forensics, and Advanced Energy Corporation, which provides a broad range of services in applied Building Science and industrial process technologies.

This relationship builds upon Owens Corning's strong heritage in the research and testing of energy performance in the home. Since the mid 1970s, the company's Science and Technology Center in Granville, OH, has conducted extensive testing and research on all areas of the energy performance of a residence at a designated Energy Research laboratory. During this time three test homes were also constructed to collect and analyze data through state-of-the-art computer programming. The data gathered during this time has been integral to the development of Owens Corning's high quality products, as well as state and federal energy codes and standards.

"This is an ideal sponsorship for Owens Corning," said John Pagano, vice president, Residential Insulation for Owens Corning. "For more than 50 years, we have been at the forefront delivering both the builder and the homeowner innovative solutions for the home. This program enables Owens Corning to deliver complete solutions to enhance the comfort of the home through one of the nation's most highly regarded certified home energy programs."
