Biography: John Tooley

John Tooley is one of the world's foremost experts in the field of Building Science. During the past decade alone, he has diagnosed and repaired more than 5,000 residential buildings. Tooley served as one of the primary developers of construction specifications for the Environments For Living® program.

Tooley is a recipient of the Energy Efficient Building Association's coveted Joule Award for innovative contributions to the building industry. He received the State of Florida "Governors' Energy Award" and was honored for his contributions to Florida Power and Light's duct leakage program, which received the U.S. Department of Energy's National Award for Energy.

Tooley discovered and researched many new methods for increasing the efficiency of HVAC systems. He was one of the first to recognize and explore the problems caused by pressure differentials within buildings. In 1986, he began to develop standards and test protocols for mechanical air distribution, now known throughout the HVAC industry as the MAD-Air standard.

In 1980, as a partner in Natural Florida Homes, Tooley was responsible for the successful design and construction of two passively cooled homes in Orlando, Fla., an effort funded by a grant from the Department of Energy. Later, he owned and operated Natural Florida Retrofit, a contracting, consulting, training and research corporation. The firm provided thermographic scans, building failure investigations, remediation plan development, and consulting and contracting services.

In January 1996, Tooley joined Raleigh, N.C.-based Advanced Energy as a Building Science consultant and senior trainer for the organization's nationally recognized Building Science training program. He has conducted dozens of training programs for builders, HVAC contractors and weatherization specialists across the country – from Alaska to Florida – and has authored or co-authored numerous scientific papers.
